What changes the price

Size and shape

Price per m² drops a little on bigger drives, because the set-up costs are shared over more area. Curves, steps and cut-outs around trees or bay windows add labour.

Digging out and the sub-base

Most of the cost on a new drive is below the surface. Old concrete or tarmac has to be broken out and taken away, then a compacted stone sub-base is laid. Checkatrade adds about £1,000 for new foundations on a tarmac drive. If the old base is sound, some surfaces can go over it, which saves money.

Drainage

A non-permeable drive over 5 m² that sheds water onto the road needs planning permission, so most quotes include a way to deal with rainwater: a permeable surface, a channel drain, or a fall towards a lawn or border. (Source: Planning Portal)

Access and edging

Narrow access, skip permits, steps up to the house and new kerb edging all add to the price.

Dropped kerb fees in Rotherham and Barnsley

If you need to drive across the pavement, the dropped kerb is approved by the council, not by your driveway installer.

Rotherham Council

  • Standard charge: £143, non-refundable, for administration, inspection and adoption.
  • If the council builds it, its minimum construction fee for a standard crossing (about five kerbs over a 1.8 m footway) is £3,000.
  • The parking area must be at least 2.5 m by 5 m.
  • On A, B or C roads you need planning permission first.

Barnsley Council

  • £285 if your own approved contractor builds it, or £95 administration if the council does the work and quotes for it.
  • Allow 28 days for the council to contact you after you apply.

Getting an accurate price

A price per m² only gets you so far. To quote properly we need to see the drive: its levels, what is under it, where the water goes and how the pavement is laid. Send the quick form and we will arrange a visit.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest driveway surface?

Gravel is usually the cheapest, at £40 to £100 per m² supplied and laid according to MyJobQuote. Tarmac is typically the next cheapest of the hard surfaces at about £90 per m².

Is block paving cheaper than resin?

Usually a little. Checkatrade puts block paving at £90 to £130 per m² and resin bound at about £120 per m² on average, so on many drives the two end up close. Ground work and drainage often make a bigger difference than the surface.

How much does a dropped kerb cost in Rotherham?

Rotherham Council charges a standard £143 for administration, inspection and adoption. The construction is extra. If you ask the council to build it, its minimum fee for a standard crossing is £3,000.

Are these prices your prices?

No. They are typical figures from published cost guides, shown so you can budget. Your quote is written for your own drive after a visit.

Do driveway prices include VAT?

Check each quote. Checkatrade notes that VAT adds 20% to the final bill where the installer is VAT registered.
